The importance of positive communication in the family
The influence of family communication is critical. The interaction between parents and children is essential and constructive.
The interaction between members of a family consists of a system of emotional relationships between people who usually live together and are a source of mutual support.
The family is the first socialization field for an individual, and communication is an essential factor in this process.
When it comes to communication, the "what is transmitted" is as important as the "how it is transmitted". Communication is very important in the adjustment of children both in childhood and adolescence.
The influence of communication on the adaptation process of both children and adolescents can be positive or negative:
Positive family communication leads to:
- Positive attitude in life
- Positive self-esteem, personal self-assessment
- Satisfaction in life
Family communication problems lead to:
- Depression symptoms
- Stress and anxiety
- Feelings of loneliness
- Behavior problems
Couples who maintain a positive communication among them are generating a healthy family base. Children will benefit from this, and the benefits will show in their interactions with their teachers, friends and family members. Adolescents who value a positive communication with their parents have low participation in violent behaviors, drugs, etc. In essence, positive communication promotes individual as well as interpersonal welfare.
On the other hand, problems of communication between parents and offensive and hurtful interaction between parents and children or between siblings are related to a high degree of depressive symptoms, low self-esteem, behavioral problems and social integration with peers. As children reach adulthood, they usually repeat the familiar pattern that they grew in and learned.
Therefore, it is critical to learn to communicate positively. Knowing the proper tools to attain this, effectively using them, and transmitting them to your children, will help generate individuals with high self-esteem, and respect for themselves and others. This will serve as an instrument to promote healthy relationships that will enhance their own satisfaction, their individual progress, and will ultimately enrich the society they belong to.
